Building careers
Our scale means we offer diverse, exciting careers across New Zealand. We have the power of three major brands: Fletcher Construction, Higgins and Brian Perry Civil.
Our people have endless opportunities within the Fletcher family. It is very important to us that every single person at Fletcher Construction has the chance to grow their career. To do this, we offer a wide range of in-house programmes. We also have a very generous Employee Educational Fund that can be accessed by all staff members, and their families, for external training.
Every summer, we offer second and third-year students invaluable real-life construction experience during their summer break.
Every summer, we offer second and third-year students invaluable real-life construction experience during their summer break. Summer interns work for us from November through to February.
If you're studying, we could find you a role on challenging and exciting infrastructure and building projects to complement your study. Applications typically open in June. Selected summer interns may continue on as trainees while they complete their tertiary study or as graduates following the completion of their study.
“My summer internship has been an insightful and incredible journey I’ll always be super grateful for.
During my time at Brian Perry Civil, I was fortunate enough to have been primarily working on Watercare’s $2.4 billion construction partnership with Fletcher Construction through the Watercare Enterprise Model programme. The programme has allowed me to partake in the delivery of multiple water and wastewater projects across Tāmaki Makaurau.
Throughout the journey, I picked up precious tools and knowledge. For example, mastering the illustration of underground and overhead services in the vicinity of construction work sites via before Udig and GIS maps. On top of that, the environment at the office was well suited to my learning, where I was able to pick up on many of the technical language thrown around.
A massive thanks to the BPC team I’ve interacted with during my internship, thanks a million for making me feel welcome.”
- Omer Abdelrazig, BPC Summer Intern

Fletcher Construction supports the development of our people early in their careers through a number of different pathways.
Fletcher Construction supports the development of our people early in their careers through a number of different pathways. One of these is apprenticeships in Higgins and Brian Perry Civil.
There is widespread demand for people who are skilled and qualified in civil trades. Apprenticeship programmes are a large part of industry training and although traditionally apprenticeships are linked to trades such as plumbing and gas fitting, they are now an important part of early in career roles in the civil infrastructure and waters industries. We have a variety of apprenticeship options to suit specialist roles across Higgins and Brian Perry Civil.
With a large fleet of trucks and heavy machinery, Higgins has workshops across the country and a team of mechanics keeping our plant and equipment working efficiently.
One of our mechanics is Nick Tuck who recently completed his apprenticeship, finishing a Certificate in Heavy Automotive Engineering in Road Technology L4. Congratulations Nick!
Nick joined Higgins Palmerston North in July 2019, starting his career working one day a week through the Gateway work experience program at Palmerston North Boys High. “After six months, I was lucky enough to be offered an apprenticeship as a Diesel Mechanic.”
“I really enjoy the work and the team at Higgins. They are very knowledgeable and always been willing to share their experience with me. Since starting with the business I‘ve had the chance to work on all sorts of trucks, trailers and machinery and picked up a number of licences including W/T/R, forklift, class 2 and 4.”
Looking ahead Nick’s planning to get more licences and keep on building his mechanical knowledge with the Green Team.

For anyone wanting help to get to the next stage of their career, we have a very well-funded Employee Educational Fund (EEF). Permanent employees of Fletcher Construction and their partners can apply to the EEF to fund career-related tuition and programmes.
The EEF also supports tamariki. School-age children can access funding to take extra academic tuition or personal development programmes – and to continue their studies when they leave high school. This is offered to our employees as part of the wider Fletcher Building business. For further information visit www.fbeducation.com.
"I used the EEF to get a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies. Alongside the knowledge learnt in class I have strengthened my ability to give equal attention to multiple projects, and the support I received from Fletcher Construction has been invaluable. I love applying the knowledge I have gained in the workplace, and it has allowed me to progress into new roles which I otherwise may not have had the opportunity or ability to perform."
