Higgins is a company that welcomes and supports people from all backgrounds.

We pride ourselves on bringing a whānau focus to our projects. That means everyone becomes part of the family, regardless of race, religion, gender or sexuality.
Supporting a diverse workforce begins with the interview process. Where possible, we use diverse interview panels.
Our parent company Fletcher Building has employee action groups with executive sponsors for our women, Māori and LGBTQ+ employees. This provides a diverse employee viewpoint to senior management.

We are working towards a goal of 30% or more of our operational leadership roles being filled by women.

Women

We are working towards a goal of 30% or more of our operational leadership roles being filled by women. To do this, we are supporting and fostering our female team members at all levels.

Our Women in Construction network and Women to Leadership programme support our female workforce. They help to shape women’s experiences at work and give practical support to emerging leaders.

The Women to Leadership programme sees women spending a year in a group mentoring setting and completing specially designed workshops. The programme's aim is to support their rise through the ranks at Fletcher Construction. Women to Leadership was designed by organisational culture specialist Dr Galia Barhava-Monteith.

All of our women have access to free membership to the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and the NZ Women's Infrastructure Network (WIN). These memberships are open through the Fletcher Building Equality Network.

Fletcher Construction parent company Fletcher Building has principal partnership with Jobs for Mums, New Zealand's job site for family-friendly work. Jobs for Mums offers job opportunities that help families find flexible work options. As part of this partnership, Jobs for Mums will bring their community a wide range of job opportunities from across Fletcher Building’s family of businesses and well-known brands including Fletcher Construction, Higgins and Brian Perry Civil.

Also, we have partnered with Hello Period which allows our women to anonymously access free, reusable menstrual products, paid for by Fletcher Construction. This is especially important for our women who are managing periods while working in site-based positions.

As part of Fletcher Building, we offer the Whakatupu programme to our emerging Māori leaders. Whakatupu aims to allow participants to explore and embrace their background and abilities and bring a Māori perspective to leadership.

For our Pasifika team members, we offer Growing Pasifika Niu. It is a unique programme for emerging Pasifika leaders in the corporate sector.

Fletcher Construction is proud to support Māori and Pasifika engineers by sponsoring SPPEEx (South Pacific Professional Engineering Excellence). This is an organisation that develops Māori and Pasifika people in engineering.

Our parent company, Fletcher Building is a principal sponsor of the First Foundation and Tupu Toa, which focus on development and work opportunities for Māori and Pasifika youth and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
